Music of the Sphere Ensemble at St John’s Notting Hill
Thursday 9th May, 7.30pm Tickets £10
Due to popular demand, Orpheus Leander and Alberto Portugheis return to the Mayfest to perform an exciting programme of violin and piano masterpieces.
Orpheus Leander, resident artist at St John's Church Notting Hill, has travelled around the globe both as a solo, chamber artist and as the leader of the Orfeas String Quartet and Music of the Spheres Ensemble. Alberto Portugheis, celebrated International solo, chamber pianist and recording artist, has performed as soloist with the London Symphony, Royal Philharmonic and many other orchestras, in this country and abroad.
Their imaginative programme takes off with two works of youth, one by sunny Schubert, the other by forward looking and dramatic Beethoven.
The work that follows - Alberto Ginastera's Pampeana - will transport you to the serene Argentine Pampas, and the ferocious rhythms danced by the local Gauchos. Alberto Portugheis worked closely with the composer and has recorded Ginastera's Complete Works for Piano and Chamber Music with piano.
After the interval comes the inspired, mystical and monumental Sonata by Cesar Franck, written for the legendary violinist Eugene Ysaye in 1886. A grand Romantic work, whose themes stay in your memory forever.
